The 200 Best Comics of My Lifetime (The Last 20 Years): 160-151

160. The Maxx #1
Image - March 1993
Writer - Bill Messner-Loebs
Artist - Sam Keith
The Maxx has gone down as one of the great success stories of the early 1990s, and the first issue gives the impression that it was always destined for greatness; a fun story, great artwork and some of the most fun you'll find in an early Image book.

159. Startling Stories: Banner #4
Marvel - October 2001
Writer - Brian Azzarello
Artist - Richard Corben
A strange mini-series, Banner focused on Bruce Banner's attempted destruction of the Hulk, and served as a What If kind of story in parallel to the regular Hulk title; the final issue where Bruce finally manages to cure himself is a truly satisfying moment in comics.

158. Supreme Power #1
MAX - October 2003
Writer - J. Michael Straczynski
Artist - Gary Frank
The start of JMS's adult series using mock-up Justice League characters began with a bang, focusing on the origin of the sadistic Superman character, Hyperion; it's a wonderfully paranoid piece of work and by the end of the issue you can't wait to read the whole series.

157. X-Men #85
Marvel - February 1999
Writer - Joe Kelly
Artist - Alan Davis
The final, brutal showdown by the X-Men and Magneto in Joe Kelly's run on the title was arguably the best moment of 1999; it showed just how capable Kelly was as a writer, as well as showing off some gorgeous art from Alan Davis.

156. Fantastic Four #584
Marvel - December 2010
Writer - Jonathan Hickman
Artist - Steve Epting
The second chapter of Jonathan Hickman's "Three" arc featuring the death of a member of the FF was certainly the best moment; focusing on Ben Grimm, it showed us what it's truly like to be the Thing and have a brief grasp on our humanity.

155. Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season Eight #5
Dark Horse - July 2007
Writer - Joss Whedon
Artist - Paul Lee
The issue that cemented this follow-up to the Buffy TV show's credibility; answering questions from the TV show regarding Buffy's actions in the final season of Angel, it also focused on the more human aspect of being a Slayer, and the sacrifices made to preserve the stability of the world.

154. Robin #25
DC - February 1996
Writer - Chuck Dixon
Artist - Mike Wieringo
An issue focusing on the dangers of gun crime sees some truly powerful stuff involving Robin and his friends; it just goes to show how great Chuck Dixon was back in the mid-90s and how Robin remained one of the best titles being published.

153. Avengers (vol. 3) #22
Marvel - November 1999
Writer - Kurt Busiek
Artist - George Perez
The final chapter of Busiek and Perez's fantastic Ultron storyline shows just how fantastic their run on the book was; there are twists and turns in the tale, while also managing to add in excessive action sequences and some great character development.

152. Daredevil #50
Marvel - October 2003
Writer - Brian Michael Bendis
Artists - Alex Maleev, David Mack, Gene Colan, Joe Quesada, John Romita Sr, Klaus Janson, Lee Weeks & Michael Avon Oeming
The conclusion to the first epoch of Bendis and Maleev's Daredevil run features a brutal showdown between Daredevil and Kingpin, and boasts a showcase of artists taking control of the action; the ending is brutal and shows just how unstable Matt Murdock had become, while also setting the stage for the next 30 issues of story.

151. New X-Men #114
Marvel - July 2001
Writer - Grant Morrison
Artist - Frank Quitely
The first chapter of Grant Morrison's weird, but wonderful, run on the X-Men showed just how he planned to alter and expand the team; the introduction of Cassandra Nova as a genuine threat to the X-Men was shocking and the potential it created was marvellous.
